Best of the Year – Music

2007 went by in the blink of an eye – and while the music “industry” struggles with 20 percent declines, the music which was released was some of the best ever. Bands i saw this year included The New Pornographers, The Shins, Weird Weather, Viva Voce, Carolyn Mark, Geoff Berner and Hush Money. All were worth the price of admission. I hope to get out to more shows in the coming year.

So, discs of the year in no particular order are:

M.I.A. – Kala – with special attention to the track Paper Planes
MIA proved, with Kala that the attention she received with her debut – Arular was more than deserved.

Radiohead – In Rainbows – Awesome from opening distortion to ending droll piano. Infused with orchestral body, jazzy washes and a warm sound indicating a band still in their prime.

Great Lake Swimmers – Ongiara – lush and beautiful

Shout Out Louds – Our Ill Wills – sweet candy pop

Jens Lekmen – Night Falls Over Kortedala

The White Stripes – Icky Thump – lots of guitars and love

Weird Weather – lovely, melancholy and sweet

The Coral – Roots and Echos – this Brit band continues to inspire with sweet melodies and vocal harmonies that inspire me

Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger – he’s a master and songs like Two prove it over and over again

Wilco – Sky Blue Sky – easily the best American album of the year

The New Pornographers – Challengers – varied and sweet pop confections fill up this maturing release
